Arch Coal is a coal producer. Co. produces coal from surface and underground mines for sale to domestic and international customers as steam coal to power plants and industrial facilities and metallurgical coal used in steel production. At Dec 31 2011, Co. operated, or contracted out the operation of, 46 active mines located in each of the coal-producing regions of the U.S. In addition, Co. owns a 99% membership interest in a joint venture named Arch Western Resources, LLC (Arch Western), which operates coal mines in Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. Co. also acts as the managing member of Arch Western. Co.'s reportable segments are: Powder River Basis; Western Bituminous; Appalachia; and Other.
